All For Good Romans

Topic: Sermon Passage: Romans 8:28

Rom. 8:28

“God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good.”
You’ve probably heard that saying - & it’s TRUE! As David expressed so beautifully, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”(Ps. 23:6)

But our FAITH in GOD, and in the constant GOODNESS of God, is put to the test during DIFFICULT or PAINFUL times.
And yet, the Bible states so clearly: Rom. 8:28.

HOW does this great verse WORK, when put up against some of life’s greatest TRIALS?
When your SON has been out late, & a POLICEMAN comes to the door?
When you LOSE your JOB?
When all your hard-earned SAVINGS are LOST?
Based upon the way many people INTERPRET Rom. 8:28, the BIBLE is LYING. After all, EVERYTHING in life doesn’t turn out GOOD!

What does this verse mean? REMEMBER the CONTEXT:
Paul is talking to BELIEVERS.
He gives ASSURANCE to believers that they are CERTAIN to receive an INHERITANCE from God, which helps put their present-day SUFFERINGS in PERSPECTIVE: Rom. 8:16-18.
We LONG for that time when we will RECEIVE our inheritance: Rom. 8:23.
Until then, we RELY upon the HOLY SPIRIT: Rom. 8:26-27.
Then, there is our verse: Rom. 8:28.

Some important truths to remember:
This PROMISE is for BELIEVERS ONLY: “for those who love God.”

Because of this, believers should be CAREFUL in USING this verse to bring FALSE ASSURANCE to a friend or loved one who is NOT a believer.

It is critically important to understand the MEANING of “GOOD.”
Is it SUCCESS in life?
Is it personal HAPPINESS?

Rom. 8:28 deals with the ULTIMATE GOOD of believers: Rom. 8:29.

God’s ULTIMATE GOOD for His children is to make us MORE LIKE CHRIST.

Therefore, God uses “all things” in the believer’s life to GROW us SPIRITUALLY, making us MORE like JESUS, UNTIL He calls us HOME.

The GREATEST DEMONSTRATION of Rom. 8:28 is the CROSS: Acts 4:27-28.

“Bad things happen, but God works it for good.”
(Eric Bargerhuff)
WHATEVER happens in life – GOOD or BAD – God is AT WORK in us, ACCOMPLISHING His PURPOSE for us.
Phil. 1:6 (NIV): “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.”

The WORST EVIL, then, that can happen to a believer can be used by God to accomplish the GREATEST GOOD.
Ex: the famous story of the MISSIONARIES sent to Ecuador to minister to the AUCA Indians.
Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Roger Youderian, & Peter Fleming were ALL MURDERED by the very people they were seeking to SHARE the GOSPEL with.
WHAT GOOD came from this terrible tragedy?
RELATIVES of the murdered missionaries RETURNED there: they LOVED the PEOPLE, SHARED the GOSPEL, & eventually, MANY Auca Indians CAME to CHRIST.

We must keep in mind, then, especially when we’re dealing with SUFFERING or TRAGEDY, that GOD is AT WORK, & that He is AT WORK to accomplish something GOOD for you -
IF you are a BELIEVER in Christ.

BAD things can AND WILL happen to us in this life – but ETERNAL GOOD will be the ULTIMATE RESULT.
