A Blessed Accusation

June 1, 2014

Topic: Sermon Passage: Luke 15:1–15:2

“A BLESSED ACCUSATION”
Luke 15:1-2

Sometimes, what is INTENDED as a HARSH ACCUSATION should be UNDERSTOOD as an INCOMPARABLE COMPLIMENT.
For an example:

The APOSTLE PAUL

In PHILIPPI: Acts 16:16-21
The ACCUSATIONS:
They were “disturbing (the) city.”
They were teaching different customs.
The REALITY:
The message of the gospel will disturb a city that is full of sin.

In THESSALONICA: Acts 17:1-7
The ACCUSATIONS:
They had CHANGED the WORLD.
They proclaimed that JESUS is KING.

In EPHESUS: Acts 19:26-27
The ACCUSATION: they had persuaded people to FORSAKE IDOLATRY.

In CAESEREA: Acts 26:24-29
The ACCUSATIONS:
You’re OUT of your MIND.
You actually think you can PERSUADE me to become a CHRISTIAN.
Prov. 29:27: “An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, but one whose way is straight is an abomination to the wicked.”

Sadly, most of us will never EXPERIENCE such MISUNDERSTANDING or harsh CRITICISM, because we are so LACKING in BOLDNESS & FAITHFULNESS to the gospel.

But, what any Christian – including Paul – could be ACCUSED of PALES in comparison to what JESUS’ harshest CRITICS & biggest ENEMIES said of Him.
What THEY perceived as the WORST insult – the HARSHEST accusation – the most CONVINCING argument AGAINST Jesus is actually what gives US our HIGHEST HOPE, & our DEEPEST JOY: Luke 15:1-2.

Is there any BETTER NEWS than THAT?
Ironically, what the Pharisees SAID here regarding Jesus is actually TRUE - & I’m so GLAD!
Were it NOT true, you & I would TRULY be without HOPE & without GOD.
If Jesus does not “RECEIVE” sinners – if He does not WELCOME them, FORGIVE them, or FELLOWSHIP with them –
Then I would FOREVER be CONDEMNED & SEPARATED from God.

But He does receive sinners!
That is why we have HOPE today, & that is why we are HERE today, at His TABLE. Therefore:
Be ENCOURAGED

Be AMAZED

Be GRATEFUL

Be JOYFUL – for “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” (Luke 15:2)
