“Matthew: Gospel of the Grace of God”

“The CHALLENGE of the CROSS”
Matthew 16:21-28

For the LORD of the church, and for the PEOPLE of the church, there is a CROSS to bear

Must Jesus bear the cross alone, and all the world go free?
No, there’s a cross for everyone, and there’s a cross for me.

CHRIST & the CROSS
Matthew 16:21-23

Matthew 16:21

1. “He must go to Jerusalem.”

Luke 13:33: “I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.”

2. He must “suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes.”

3. He must “be killed.”

Acts 2:23: “this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.”

4. He must “on the third day be raised.”

Matthew 16:21

Matthew 16:22

Matthew 16:23

Matthew 4:10: “Be gone, Satan!”

The CHRISTIAN & the Cross
Matthew 16:24-28

Matthew 16:24

Matthew 10:37-39

1. SELF-DENIAL

2. CROSS-BEARING

“Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” (2 Timothy 3:12, NASB)

3. TOTAL OBEDIENCE

John 12:26: “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also.”

Matthew 16:25

Matthew 16:26

Matthew 16:27

Daniel 7:9-10

Daniel 7:13-14

Matthew 24:29-31

Revelation 22:12: “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.”

1. Because to DO so means to SAVE your soul, while to REFUSE to do so means to LOSE your soul.
2. Because your SOUL is MORE VALUABLE than the ENTIRE WORLD.
3. Because those who FOLLOW Jesus will someday be REWARDED by Jesus.

Matthew 16:28

1. We KNOW that we need to DENY self & take up our CROSS & FOLLOW Jesus, but are we DOING it?
2. We KNOW that our SOUL is INVALUABLE, but do we LIVE as if we really BELIEVE it?
3. We KNOW that Christ will RETURN, but do we look FORWARD to it JOYFULLY?

Must Jesus bear the cross alone, and all the world go free?
No, there’s a cross for everyone, and there’s a cross for me.
