“Matthew: Gospel of the Grace of God”

(Part One)
Matthew 18:1-14

Matthew 18:1

Matthew 20:20-21

Acts 1:6: “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom of Israel?”

William Barclay “the very fact that they asked that question showed that they had no idea what the Kingdom of Heaven was like.”

1. HUMBLE Themselves
Matthew 18:2-4

D.A. Carson: “The child is a model, in this context, not of innocence, faith, or purity, but of humility and unconcern for social status. Jesus assumed that people are not naturally like that; they must change to become like little children.”

Matthew 5:3

J.C. Ryle “The surest mark of (any) true conversion is humility.”

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that at the proper time he may exalt you.” 1 Peter 5:6

Matthew 18:5-7; 10-14

Matthew 18:5

Matthew 25:31-40

Matthew 18:6

Zecheriah 2:8 “he who touches you touches the apple of his eye.”

By TEMPTING them to sin
By setting a sinful EXAMPLE
By ABUSING one’s LIBERTY as a child of God

Warren Wiersbe: “The truly humble person helps to build up others, not to tear them down. He is a stepping-stone, not a stumbling-block.”

Matthew 18:7

Matthew 25:41-46

Matthew 18:10

James 2:1 “My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory.”

Matthew 18:12-13

Matthew 2:6; 9:36

John 10:11: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

“Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.” Psalms 100:3

God CARES for us, INDIVIDUALLY: Matthew 18:12
God SEEKS us when we STRAY

Luke 19:10: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Romans 5:8: “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.”

God REJOICES when we REPENT & RETURN to Him: Matthew 18:13

Luke 15:7: “there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”

ALL of God’s children will be PRESERVED – EVEN those who have STRAYED from Him: Matthew 18:14;

John 10:27-29

Matthew 18:8-9

“is a stepping-stone, not a stumbling block. Therefore, anything that causes me to stumble must be removed from my life, for if it is not, I cause others to stumble.” (Wiersbe)

Matthew 5:29-30

John MacArthur: “The point was that a person should do whatever is necessary, no matter how extreme or painful it might be, to keep from sinning himself or to keep from causing others to sin.”

Oh, yes, oh yes, I’m a child of the King.
His royal blood now flows in my veins.
And I who was wretched and poor now can sing,
Praise God, praise God, I’m a child of the King.

“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” Romans 8:16
